Is Peroni gluten free?

Gluten reduced

It depends which one. Standard Peroni Nastro Azzurro is not safe for coeliacs, but Peroni Nastro Azzurro Gluten Free is a separate, certified beer tested below the 20ppm limit. Check the label.

Peroni is another I answer with a question, because it is two beers with nearly the same name, and for anyone with coeliac disease the difference is everything. Standard Peroni Nastro Azzurro is a normal barley lager and is not safe. Peroni Nastro Azzurro Gluten Free is a separate, certified gluten free beer that is, and it happens to be one of the easiest gluten free lagers to find on a UK supermarket shelf.

The standard lager: not safe

Regular Peroni Nastro Azzurro is brewed from barley. There is no gluten removal step and no gluten free claim, so it contains gluten and is not suitable for people with coeliac disease. If the bottle or can does not explicitly say Gluten Free, this is the one you are holding.

Peroni Gluten Free: certified safe

The gluten free version is a deliberately different product. It is brewed from the same barley base, then an enzyme is added at the end of the brewing process to break the gluten proteins down. The finished beer is tested below the 20 parts per million threshold that defines a gluten free beer, and it is endorsed by the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC). That certification is what makes it safe for coeliacs.

It is also genuinely convenient. Where many gluten free beers need a specialist retailer, Peroni Gluten Free is stocked by most large UK supermarkets, which makes it one of the easiest safe lagers to pick up on a normal shop.

As with every enzyme treated barley beer, the pack still says contains barley. That is there for people with a barley allergy and does not undermine the gluten free claim. The two declarations cover two different conditions.

What to check, and what else to drink

The rule is simple: look for the word Gluten Free on the label and the coeliac endorsement. If it is plain Nastro Azzurro with no gluten free claim, it is not safe.

Frequently asked questions

Is Peroni gluten free?

There are two different beers. Standard Peroni Nastro Azzurro is brewed from barley with no gluten removal, so it is not safe for coeliacs. Peroni Nastro Azzurro Gluten Free is a separate product, treated with an enzyme to break down the gluten and certified below the 20 parts per million gluten free standard. Always check which one you are buying.

Is regular Peroni safe for coeliacs?

No. Standard Peroni Nastro Azzurro is a barley beer with no gluten removal process, so it contains gluten and is not suitable for people with coeliac disease.

How is Peroni Gluten Free made?

It is brewed from the same barley base as standard Peroni, then an enzyme is added at the end of the process to break down the gluten proteins. The finished beer is tested below the 20 parts per million threshold that defines a gluten free beer in the UK and EU.

Is Peroni Gluten Free certified?

Yes. Peroni Nastro Azzurro Gluten Free is endorsed by the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC) and tested below the 20 parts per million gluten free limit, which makes it suitable for people with coeliac disease. It is one of the easiest gluten free lagers to find in UK supermarkets.

Why does Peroni Gluten Free still say contains barley?

Because it is brewed from barley, and UK law requires the contains barley declaration for people with a barley allergy, which is a separate condition from coeliac disease. The gluten free claim covers the coeliac threshold; the barley line covers the allergy. Both are required and both are correct.
