The Story
Phil Saltonstall was a helicopter pilot who took up home brewing while his wife was posted as a diplomat to the United Nations in New York. He started brewing in their New York apartment, visited a Princeton brewery, and returned to the UK to set up his first brewery in his garage in Pocklington, East Yorkshire. The brewery moved to Malton in 2014 and expanded to a 25 barrel plant in 2023. Brass Castle makes every beer in their range gluten free and vegan, treating these as standard criteria rather than special editions. Spent grain goes to anaerobic digesters and spent hops go to local allotments.
GF approach: Every beer in the range is treated with a vegan friendly enzyme during fermentation that breaks down gluten. Tested at certified UK labs. The enzyme process is applied across the entire range as standard.
