Bellfield Brewery

Abbeyhill, Edinburgh · Founded 2015

Scottish Brewery of the Year 2023. Founded by two coeliacs who refused to accept that gluten free meant settling for less.

Gluten Reduced Brewed with low gluten barley malt and alternative grains including maize and buckwheat.
The Story

Bellfield was founded in 2015 by two friends, both coeliac, who felt the gluten free beer market was thin on quality. Alistair Brown, a former TV executive diagnosed coeliac in 2014, and Giselle Dye, whose husband Robin is also coeliac, set out to make beers that compete on quality in mainstream competitions. Not just in the gluten free category. Their name comes from a street in Portobello, Edinburgh. The brewery operates its own 2,000 litre brew plant, a taproom, and a beer garden. All team members hold equity stakes in the business.

GF approach: Brewed with low gluten barley malt and alternative grains including maize and buckwheat. Treated with enzyme. Tested below 10ppm at UKAS accredited labs using the R5 method. Certified by Coeliac UK and the Vegan Society.
